New Glarus and Rockford's Japanese Gardens

Tuesday was a gorgeous day.  We spent the afternoon touring New Glarus.  It's a little town founded by a Swiss Colony back in 1845.  It has Alpine-style architecture and is also part of the Sugar River Trail.  Unfortunately, it's not as busy as it once was.  Several of the shops were out of business and one of the shop owners commented that there are far fewer visitors today than years ago when she first moved there.  Nevertheless, we had a lovely day.  We ate at Puempel's Old Tavern where you can see patriotic folk art murals that were painted on the walls in 1913 by Andrea Hofer.

On Wednesday we drove to Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford, IL.  They are rated one of North America's highest quality Japanese gardens.  If you're ever in the area, you might want to check it out.  They are not huge, just 12 acres, but they are filled with winding pathways, meandering streams, and plunging waterfalls.

We enjoyed a lovely ride through the country side to get to Rockford.  After our garden visit, we went to eat at a Japanese restaurant.  It was very good.  In keeping with the theme, we watched Lost in Translation (a movie that takes place in Japan,) to round out our day.
